Afraid to (do) и afraid of (do)ing

I am afraid to do something = я боюсь делать что-то = я не хочу делать это, потому что это опасно или потому, что может быть плохой результат.

Мы используем afraid to do для действий, которые мы делаем намеренно; мы можем решить делать их или не делать:

• This part of town is dangerous. People are afraid to walk here at night.
  (= они не хотят ходить здесь, потому что это опасно, поэтому они здесь и не ходят)
• James was afraid to tell his parents what had happened.
  (= он не хотел говорить им, потому что он знал, что они рассердятся, будут волноваться и т.п.)

I am afraid of something happening = я боюсь, что что-то случится (например, несчастный случай), потому что такая вероятность есть.

Мы не используем afraid of -ing для намеренных действий:

• The path was icy, so we walked very carefully. We were afraid of falling - Мы боялись упасть. (= была вероятность, что мы упадем - not we were afraid to fall)
• I don’t like dogs. I’m always afraid of being bitten. Я всегда боюсь, что меня укусят. (not afraid to be bitten)

Т.е., вы are afraid to do something (боитесь что-то делать), потому что вы are afraid of something happening (боитесь, что что-то случится) в результате:

• I was afraid to go near the dog because I was afraid of being bitten.
  Я боялся проходить мимо собаки, потому что я боялся, что меня покусают. (досл.: боялся быть укушенным)

Interested in (do)ing и interested to (do)

I’m interested in doing something = я заинтересован сделать:

• Let me know if you’re interested in joining the club. (not to join)
  Дай мне знать, если ты заинтересован вступить в клуб.
• I tried to sell my car, but nobody was interested in buying it. (not to buy)
  Я пытался продать свою машину, но никто не заинтересовался в покупке.

Мы используем interested to ..., чтобы сказать о том, как кто-нибудь реагирует на то, что они hear/see/read/leam/know/find. Например, ‘I was interested to hear it’ = я услышал это, и мне это было интересно:

• I was interested to hear that Tanya has left her job.
• Ask Mike for his opinion. I would be interested to know what he thinks. (= it would be interesting for me to know it = мне было бы интересно узнать об этом)

Эта конструкция такая же, как в уроке 65C у surprised to ... / glad to ... и др.:

• I was surprised to hear that Tanya has left her job.

Sorry to (do) и sorry for/about (do)ing

Мы используем sorry to ..., чтобы сказать, что мы сожалеем о том, что случилось (см. урок 65C):

• I was sorry to hear that Nicky lost her job. (Было жаль услышать ...)
• I’ve enjoyed my stay here. I’ll be sorry to leave.

Мы также говорим sorry to ..., когда извиняемся в момент, когда мы что-то делаем:

• I’m sorry to phone you so late, but I need to ask you something. (Извини, что звоню ...)

Вы можете использовать sorry for или sorry about (doing something), чтобы извиниться за то, что вы сделали ранее:

• I’m sorry for (or about) shouting at you yesterday. (not sorry to shout)
  Извини, что накричал на тебя вчера.

Вы также можете сказать:

• I’m sorry I shouted at you yesterday.
