Глагол + предлог + -ing
У многих глаголов есть конструкция глагол + предлог (preposition) (in/for/about и др.) + дополнение (object) . Например:
глагол + | предлог | + дополнение |
We talked | about | the problem. |
You must apologise | for | what you said. |
Если дополнением является другой глагол, он заканчивается на -ing:
глагол + | предлог | + -ing (дополнение) |
We talked | about | going to America. |
You must apologise | for | not telling the truth. |

They insisted | on | paying for the meal. |
I’m thinking | of | buying a house. |
I wouldn’t dream | of | asking them for money. |
He doesn’t approve | of | swearing. |

I’m looking forward | to | meeting her. |
Вы также можете сказать ‘approve of somebody doing something’, ‘look forward to somebody doing something’:
- I don’t approve of people killing animals for fun.

У следующих глаголов может быть конструкция глагол + дополнение + предлог + -ing (дополнение):
- I congratulated Liz on getting a new job.
- They accused us of telling lies.
- Nobody suspected the general of being a spy.
- What prevented you from coming to see us?
- The rain didn’t stop us from enjoying our holiday.
- I forgot to thank them for helping me.
- Excuse me for being so late.
- Please forgive me for not writing to you.
Вы можете сказать ‘stop somebody doing’ или ‘stop somebody from doing’:
- You can’t stop me doing what I want. или You can’t stop me from doing what I want.

Некоторые из этих глаголов часто используются в пассиве. Например:
- We were accused of telling lies.
Нас обвинили во лжи. - The general was suspected of being a spy.

Заметьте, что мы говорим ‘apologise to somebody for ...’:
- I apologised to them for keeping them waiting. (not
I apologised them)

- Some parents don’t approve of their children a lot of television.
- I’m sorry I can’t come to your party, but thank you very much for me.
