Не всегда обязательно изменять глагол в косвенной речи (reported speech). Если вы сообщаете что-то, а ситуация не изменилась, вам не нужно менять форму глагола на прошедшую:

direct

Paul said, ‘My new job is very interesting.’

reported

Paul said that his new job is very interesting.
(Ситуация не изменилась. Его работа по-прежнему интересная.)

direct

Helen said, ‘I want to go to New York next year.’

reported

Helen told me that she wants to go to New York next year.
(Хелен всё ещё хочет съездить в Нью Йорк в следующем году.)

Вы также можете изменить глагол и на прошедшую форму:

  • Paul said that his new job was very interesting.
  • Helen told me that she wanted to go to New York next year.

Но если вы сообщаете о законченной ситуации, вы должны использовать только прошедшую форму глагола:

  • Paul left the room suddenly. He said he had to go. (not has to go)

Вам также нужно использовать прошедшую форму, когда есть разница между тем, что сказали, и тем, что есть на самом деле. Например:

Вы встретили Соню несколько дней назад.
She said: ‘Joe is in hospital.’ (прямая речь)

Позже этим днем вы идете по улице и встречаете Джо. Вы говорите:
‘I didn’t expect to see you, Joe. Sonia said you were in hospital.’
(нельзя сказать ‘Sonia said you are in hospital’, потому что очевидно, что он не в больнице)

Say and tell

TELL SOMEBODY

SAY SOMEBODY

Если вам нужно сказать с кем кто-то говорит, используйте tell:

  • Sonia told me that you were in hospital. (not Sonia said me)
  • What did you tell the police? (not say the police)

В противном случае, используйте say:

  • Sonia said that you were in hospital. (not Sonia told that...)
  • What did you say?

Но вы можете ‘say something to somebody’:

  • Ann said goodbye to me and left. (not Ann said me goodbye)
  • What did you say to the police?

Tell/ask somebody to do something
Сказать (в смысле ‘настоятельно просить/приказывать’) / Попросить кого-нибудь сделать что-нибудь

Мы также используем инфинитив (to do / to stay и т.д.) в косвенной речи, особенно с tell и ask (для приказов и просьб):

direct

‘Stay in bed for a few days,’ the doctor said to me.

reported

The doctor told me to stay in bed for a few days. (‘сказал’ в значении ‘настоятельно рекомендовал’)

direct

‘Don’t shout,’ I said to Jim.

reported

I told Jim not to shout. (‘сказал’ в значении ‘приказал’)

direct

‘Please don’t tell anybody what happened,’ Jackie said to me.

reported

Jackie asked me not to tell anybody what (had) happened. (попросил)

Вы также можете сказать ‘Somebody said (not) to do something’:

  • Jackie said not to tell anyone. (but not Jackie said me)
